Gravitational Lensing by Galaxy Groups in the Hubble Deep Field

چکیده

We investigate strong lensing of galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field by foreground groups and clusters of galaxies with masses from 10 to 10M⊙. Over this mass range, groups with the profile of Navarro, Frenk, & White (1995) are less efficient than singular isothermal spheres at producing multiple images of galaxies, by factors of 5× 10 to 10. This difference highlights the sensitivity of the lensing cross section to the central density profile. Nonetheless, with either profile we find that the expected number of galaxies lensed by groups in the Hubble Deep Field is at most . 1, consistent with the lack of clearly identified group lens systems. Observation of small scale structure using sextupole lensing

Weak gravitational lensing seeks to determine shear by measuring induced quadrupole (elliptical) shapes in background galaxy images. Small impact parameter (a few kpc) gravitational lensing by a foreground mass the order of 10 to a few 10M⊙ will additionally induce a sextupole shape with the quadrupole and sextupole minima aligned. This correlation in relative orientation of the quadrupole and ...

Frontier Fields: High-redshift Predictions and Early Results

The Frontier Fields program is obtaining deep Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope images of new “blank” fields and nearby fields gravitationally lensed by massive galaxy clusters. The Hubble images of the lensed fields are revealing nJy sources (AB mag > 31), the faintest galaxies yet observed. In this paper, we present high-redshift (z > 6) number count predictions for the full program and cand...

A Lower Limit on Ωm −ΩΛ Using the Gravitational Lensing Rate in the Hubble Deep Field

We calculate the expected strong gravitational lensing rate in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) by using photometric redshift information for galaxies present in all four HDF passbands with a I-band magnitude limit of 27. A comparison of these predictions with the observed number of strongly lensed sources places a lower limit on the current value of Ωm − ΩΛ, where Ωm is the cosmological mass densit...
